Kristina and I have always been the type of people who tried to help anyone in need, but then came a boy with special needs named Jake. In high school, Kristina answered an ad for a mother’s helper, and after her first day on the job, we both fell in love. He became the highlight of our day. I had to pick up Kristina after working with him and she would say “you don’t have to come in.” I always answered, “of course I do, I need my Jake fix, too.” Jake was a little boy with special needs who would light up the room with his smile. He passed away shortly after his second birthday but the impact he left on our lives is why we want to open our gym. He also became the motivation for Kristina to get her master’s degree in early education/special needs.
Kristina has also become a puppy raiser for Canine Companions to continue to give back to the special needs community. Canine Companions provides service dogs for individuals in need. We feel this gym would be a perfect merger of our love for dogs and our desire to give back to the special needs community. Providing parents a place where all their children can participate no matter their abilities is beyond our dream. Having a place where all kids are treated equally is the best place to be. We Rock the Spectrum is the type of place we have been looking for.
